Dorm Style: Bedding for Any Space

We are packing up and going to college! For all returning students and first-time dorm residents, welcome to your new space. Trying to decide how to make your dorm room feel cozier might seem difficult, but we are here to help! Bring that sense of home wherever you go. We are starting with the bedding, the foundation of your dorm room décor.

Since your Twin XL bed frame is the largest piece of furniture in the space, make sure it displays your style and allows everything else to fall into place. We’ve compiled some bedding recommendations to suit any interior design style.

Boho Bedrooms

If you’re itching to create an ethereal vibe in your dorm room, give the neutral walls of your residence hall a quirky, bohemian look! This eclectic aesthetic comes in different varieties with a range of approaches to texture, color and décor.

Bring vibrant colors to bed when you follow bohemian interior design guidelines. Because with this kind of space, there are no rules! Layer colors that stand out, or even some in the same color family. Find inspiration from the sea and create an ocean-inspired space with cool-toned blues and greens. Or let your bedroom bloom with warm reds and pinks, like a spring-time flower. And if bold colors aren’t your thing, bedding can still be dressed up in a boho way. This gives you freedom to change your décor more frequently, depending on your mood or the season.

Minimalism Makes Sense

If you live by the décor philosophy of “less is more”, you are a fan of minimalism! Your no muss no fuss attitude can be found in every aspect of your life, including your space. There are many ways to approach this look, but let’s start with your sheets. Keep your bedding sleek with a neutral color, like a mid-tone gray.

Your desire to keep your space minimal might be because you don’t see a reason to put maximum effort into a temporary living situation. Or you feel more at peace in a less cluttered room. Either way, minimalism doesn’t mean you have to forgo coziness in your dorm room or forgo making it your own space. Add subtle throw pillows and a matching blanket for colder evenings. Give yourself a comfortable landing spot in the morning with an area rug. It comes in handy if your dorm room floor is tile!

Regal in Residence Halls

We get it. You want to be the royal of your residence hall, and you deserve to have a space fit for a monarch. Creating a modern glam space doesn’t require extensive square footage, just the right details.

Dress your bed up in the finest fabrics and textiles to create an elevated dorm room. Keep things sophisticated with a neutral color palette that goes with bright metallic accents. A tufted duvet cover will give you a royal look to your bedroom and keep you warm. When it’s time to do laundry, we suggest washing this style inside out to protect the intricate detail of the duvet cover. That way you can enjoy the look for all four years! Other details for this space include faux fur pillows and a plush throw to drape over the end of the bed.

Countryside College Life

Not a fan of the minimal construction of your dorm building? Create a unique look in your space with a juxtaposing style, like the modern farmhouse style! Bringing this rustic aesthetic to your room might be the perfect thing to adjust to college life. Quaint accents remind you of a home-like aesthetic, even if you’re miles away from your hometown.

Go with a clean, crisp white quilt set for your bedding. The stitching details of the blanket will add to the farmhouse look you are going for. Include canvas and embroidered pillows for that adorable antique aspect of modern farmhouse.

Keep Things Cool

Depending on where you are going for school, and the efficiency of the dorm’s air conditioning, you also need to consider the type of bedding you decide to purchase.

Have a plethora of throw blankets on hand for whenever you need to snuggle up. You can display them in an adorable wicker basket to keep them organized. We also suggest a sheet set with an unfitted top sheet for those nights when your AC can’t decide to work.

Tips for a Better Dorm Experience

Dorm life is truly what you make of it. From what you put on your walls to the amount of time you spend hiding in your room, it makes a difference. When living on campus, you have the ability to meet other students who are navigating the same stage of life. And you can explore your university to your heart’s delight. We understand that the dining hall is not always five-star, but it’s about the memories you make around the cafeteria tables that count. Here are some helpful ways to enjoy the time spent in residence hall living.

Keep Things Open

Stay open to new possibilities and friendships, literally and figuratively. When you are hanging out in your dorm room, try propping your door open. Especially during the first few weeks, this will invite your hallmates to poke their head in and introduce themselves! College freshmen are not always the most social bunch, but it’s a lovely gesture. And if you have an adorably set up room, it’ll be a great talking point!

Find Your Theme

And if your roommate has a different style, the contrast in aesthetics might bring a unique amount of visual interest to the room! So, don’t worry if you like neutrals and they prefer bright colors, your space will look great!

Loft Your Bed

The average dorm room is about 114 square feet, so make the most of the space you have by lofting your bed! This process is usually easy, and can be accomplished by a few friends or with the call to your building’s maintenance department. Raising your bed will give you the benefit of storage space for a mini fridge or microwave. You can also get bed risers that attach to the feet, with some styles having USB charging capabilities.

Add an Area Rug

It’s no secret, the carpet of your dorm room has seen many residents. Keep the space fresh with an area rug that brightens up the space. A neutral or vibrant style can also give the illusion of more space. If your residence hall is tiled, a rug might also serve as a smooth transition from your warm bed to the chilly floor. This will come in handy during the winter!

Adorable Details in a Pouf!

Now we know space is tight in a dorm room, but small decor accents can provide so much function. Poufs can be used as an ottoman, additional seating or a step stool to reach your lofted bed. Not to mention they help complete any room of any interior design style. And when they are not being used, just tuck them away!
